Citi Pizza (504 H Street, NE) has been closed for several months due to a significant renovation and remodel. The restaurant has a bright new exterior and redid its front entrance with glass to make it more welcoming. District Cuisine got a peak inside over the weekend which revealed that Citi Pizza will now offer a small dine-in option in addition to takeout. The new interior is very open so that customers can watch their food being made (previously Citi Pizza only had a little window for customers to order through). While construction is mostly complete, they hope to reopen within the next 1-2 weeks. The menu will largely be the same as before; however, they are considering adding some additional items like salad.
Pow Pow Now Serving Weekend Breakfast
4 NovPow Pow (1253 H Street, NE) began serving breakfast this past weekend and will be adding breakfast to its online ordering this coming weekend. Breakfast will be served from 10:30-12:30 on Saturdays and Sundays. There are three different breakfast egg rolls to choose from:
- Egg, steak, and cheddar

For a limited time, each egg roll is $5 and comes with a cup of coffee.
Dish of the Week: Poke Bowl at District Fishwife
1 NovDish of the Week is a new ongoing series from District Cuisine that highlights one of our favorite dishes from a local restaurant.
In case you haven’t found out yet, several months ago, District Fishwife in Union Market expanded its offerings to include freshly prepared meals in addition to its seafood selection. The meals are primarily lunch items (dinner on the weekend) and include fish sandwiches, salmon burgers, and most recently a chili crab fried sandwich. Our favorite is the Ahi Tuna poke bowl (you can also get it with salmon, depending upon what they have available). Poke bowls (a style of marinated raw fish from Hawaii) have recently become very popular both around town and nationally (see recent Washington Post story here). District Fishwife’s preparation has a bed of rice with two different types of marinated tuna on either side of the container: a soy based marinade and a spicy aioli marinade. In the middle you get wasabi, seaweed salad, ginger, thinly sliced carrot, and fish row. The two different marinades are both delicious and play well together with the rice and salad in the middle. The poke bowl is a great way to have an interesting, fresh, and fairly light lunch or dinner (unlike several of their items, you can get the poke bowl in the late afternoon).
Taqueria and Rosticeria Fresca Expanding on H Street
31 OctTaqueria and Rosticeria Fresca (701 H Street, NE) is expanding both in terms of its space and its offerings. Fresca opened around a year ago on H Street and has been very popular ever since, especially for lunch. District Cuisine recently reported that they would be creating an outdoor patio. Fresca is now expanding into the rest of the building behind it (down 7th Street), which had previously been a barbershop. The restaurant also has building permits to make several interior renovations that will keep the front part of the building a fast casual counter service restaurant and make the back of the building (where the barbershop was) an 18 seat restaurant with table service. Additionally, Fresca recently applied for a liquor license so that it can serve drinks.
Mythology Impresses With Debut on H Street
29 SepMythology and Lore Lounge (816 H Street, NE) had been underdevelopment for quite some time and recently opened up for service on H Street after a complete renovation and rebuild of the space that had previously occupied the location (view menu here). Mythology is being headed up by Chef Joseph Harran, (previously at Vidalia and Woodward Table) and General Manager Mark Medley, (previously at The Atlas Room) and owner Todd Luongo. The first floor (open now) features fine dining for dinner and brunch soon; the second floor (coming soon) will be an upscale lounge with a separate menu and comfortable seating (like an upscale hotel lounge); the third floor will be a bar that is part indoor and part outdoor; and the fourth floor patio deck will be reserved for private events. The goal for the second floor lounge is to create a space where people can comfortably sit, relax, and enjoy nice cocktails, beers, and wines without being too crowded. The third floor will be more casual (same menu as lounge) and will have TVs for watching sports. The menus (for upstairs and downstairs) will rotate frequently based upon what is in season at the time.
Mythology aims to become a destination dining spot but also wants to be a spot for neighborhood regulars. Both the chef and GM live near H Street, so the community is very important for them. District Cuisine asked why Mythology chose the middle part of H Street, which currently does not have many restaurant options, versus the better established eastern and western ends of the Corridor. As the middle part of the Corridor develops, Mythology hopes to be a cornerstone of that development and to help spur more development.
District Cuisine stopped by for dinner during the first week of service and was impressed. We started with the feta fries (there are 12 different fry options ranging from sushi fries to bulgogi fries) that were well seasoned with a generous amount of feta. In addition to a menu of craft cocktails, Mythology offers a lengthy list of beer and wine. For main courses, we moved on to “Rock the Fish Please” and “But I’m a Vegetarian.” The rockfish was expertly seared and served over a combination of smokey bacon, crab meat, and fresh corn for a welcome end of summer taste. The creative vegetarian dish featured a chickpea ragout as well as eggplant and a lemon yogurt sauce. Continue reading
Cusbah Wins Lawsuit, Will Remain Open (Cusbah Statement)
28 SepDistrict Cuisine reported earlier this year that Cusbah’s landlord (1128 H Street, NE) was looking to evict Cusbah and replace the restaurant with something new. Over the past several months, the two sides have been involved in litigation over the eviction process. News was broken earlier this week by Frozen Tropics, that Cusbah won the lawsuit and will remain at 1128 H Street. In response to the victory, Soophia Hussain, Managing Partner at Cusbah, released the following statement:
In April 2016 many of you witnessed the “for lease” sign posted above of our restaurant and the reports by local blogs of our imminent closing. It then became public knowledge that we were in a legal dispute with our landlord regarding our lease.
The culmination of that legal dispute occurred on September 26th, 2016 in a trial between Cusbah and the Landlord, and we are happy to announce that the Judge ruled in our favor.
Our success could not have been possible without our legal counsel Hessler Bianco. Steven Hessler is an H St neighbor and friend who owns Gallery O on H St.
We also wanted to extend a big thank you to all of our patrons, neighbors, and local H St business owners who supported us during these last 6 months. The amount of emails, phone calls, and warm wishes gave us much strength during a difficult time.
At 1128 H St NE Cusbah is open so come join us for a beer and samosas. We don’t know what the future will hold but for now we’re happy we survived.
Sospeso Opening This Fall on H Street (With Sample Menu)
27 SepNews came late last year that a new Mediterranean restaurant concept called Sospeso would be opening at 1344 H Street, NE in what had previously been a real estate office. While information has been sparse since then, recently District Cuisine caught up with Sospeso’s owner Michael Rosato to learn more details. You can visit Sospeso’s website here and you can check out a sneak peak of their menu down below!
Sospeso’s name originated from Caffe Sospeso which translates to “suspended coffee” and “is a Neapolitan practice of someone anonymously paying for a coffee ahead for someone else in need.” According to Sospeso’s website, the restaurant will be “inspired by the recipes of our grandparents and great-grandparents, as well as the sun-drenched countries and seas of Southern Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean, and North Africa.” They will be focusing on high quality and locally sourced ingredients.
The owners hope to open before Thanksgiving and construction is well underway. Sospeso’s hours, once open, will be Sunday-Thursday from 7 am until 2 am and Friday-Saturday until 3 am. They will serve coffee and pastries in the morning, sandwiches and salads in the afternoon, and full dinner in the evening. Appetizers will range from $6-13 and entrees from $16-30. Dinner service will also include house made focaccia and a beverage program that focuses on Mediterranean wines and house infused vermouth and cocktails.
Sospeso will be a mom and pop operation run by Michael and his wife Hatice. Michael has extensive restaurant experience from various roles at Tryst, Zaytinya, Palena, Granville Moore’s, Toki Underground, Ghibellina, and Sotto. Most recently Michael has been running the wine program at Ghibellina and Sotto on 14th Street as well as booking music for Sotto. Hatice runs a women’s clothing import business and designed the interior of the restaurant. She will also be in charge of the restaurant’s forthcoming website, branding, and social media. As a native of Turkey, Hatice will have a big influence on the menu.
Michael says that he has always enjoyed H Street since moving to DC back in 2003. He liked the community feel so much that he moved to Trinidad in 2011, very close to where Sospeso will open up.
