Major Demolition Underway at 1270 4th Street, NE

Major demolition is underway at 1270 4th Street, NE, the future location of The Shapiro, a major residential and retail project in the Union Market area.  This lot–almost an entire city block long–is located immediately south of Masseria and Neal Place Tap and Garden on 4th Street).  Previously the Cash and Carry, the new building will be over 400 units of apartments (built in two phases) and will house a major culinary market by Chef Jose Garces (retail managed by Union Market developer Edens).  As you can see from the photo above, the entire building has been demolished except for the front wall which is being preserved to become a part of the new building.  You can learn more about the design of the building from the developer here.

You can check out a comprehensive map of existing and future plans near Union Market, by checking out District Cuisine’s interactive map here.

Interior Bar Area at Cotton & Reed

Cotton & Reed (1330 5th Street, NE) has come quite a long way since District Cuisine toured the space last November (you can see our post with construction photos here).  The rum distillery and tasting room by friends and former co-workers Reed Walker and Jordan Cotton will open this Saturday in Union Market (less than half a block away from the main Union Market building).  District Cuisine got a sneak peak as part of the media preview last week.

Cotton & Reed will be open from 4 pm until midnight Wednesday-Friday and noon until midnight Saturday and Sunday.  The distillery has a beautiful bar in the front where customers can order craft cocktails featuring Cotton & Reed rum created by mixologist Lucas Smith.  In their opening run, Cotton & Reed created a white rum and a dry spiced rum, both of which are available for purchase or as shots.  During good weather, the front window will be open to allow a fresh breeze to come in through the bar.  Visitors will be able to get a tour of the distillery located in the back behind the bar area during business hours.  The entire space is also available to rent for larger parties and events.

As Cotton & Reed becomes more established, they will produce additional varieties of rum.  They plan to distribute their rums to area restaurants and stores when they open.  Cotton & Reed will be a very welcome addition to the Union Market area, and we hope that it inspires similar local businesses to join the area in the near future!

Dish of the Week: Poke Bowl at District Fishwife

Poke Bowl at District Fishwife

Poke Bowl at District Fishwife

Dish of the Week is a new ongoing series from District Cuisine that highlights one of our favorite dishes from a local restaurant.

In case you haven’t found out yet, several months ago, District Fishwife in Union Market expanded its offerings to include freshly prepared meals in addition to its seafood selection.  The meals are primarily lunch items (dinner on the weekend) and include fish sandwiches, salmon burgers, and most recently a chili crab fried sandwich.  Our favorite is the Ahi Tuna poke bowl (you can also get it with salmon, depending upon what they have available).  Poke bowls (a style of marinated raw fish from Hawaii) have recently become very popular both around town and nationally (see recent Washington Post story here).  District Fishwife’s preparation has a bed of rice with two different types of marinated tuna on either side of the container: a soy based marinade and a spicy aioli marinade.  In the middle you get wasabi, seaweed salad, ginger, thinly sliced carrot, and fish row.  The two different marinades are both delicious and play well together with the rice and salad in the middle.  The poke bowl is a great way to have an interesting, fresh, and fairly light lunch or dinner (unlike several of their items, you can get the poke bowl in the late afternoon).

Entrance Area for Two New Hotels Near Union Market

Two new Hilton hotels opened near Union Market recently.  A Hampton Inn and a Homewood Suites are located at 501 New York Avenue, NE.  The two new properties replaced a rundown Quality Inn that had previously occupied the land.  The hotels both open up onto New York Avenue but feature a shared courtyard inside and away from the main road (you need a key card to enter from New York Avenue).  The main entrances for the hotels are located in this courtyard area that is much quieter than the busy road outside.  Both hotels are being marketed as “near Union Station” and easily accessible to the NoMa Metro station.  The new hotels join the Hilton Garden Inn, Courtyard by Marriott, Hyatt Place in NoMa and the Howard Johnson nearby on New York Avenue.

Closed Notice for Union Social

District Cuisine reported several weeks ago that a for lease posting had been put online for Union Social in NoMa.  That listing was promptly taken down; however, it now appears that Union Social is officially closed.  The space is very large (it could probably be two restaurants) and located towards the top of NoMa.  We’ll be on the lookout for what the space may become.

Signage is up for the relocation of the Washington Cash and Carry in Union Market (1270 4th Street, NE–the very large building just south of Masseria on 4th Street, NE).  It was announced awhile ago that the Cash and Carry would be relocating to Landover, Maryland to make way for a complete redevelopment of the block.  A large residential building called the Shapiro and a major retail space managed by Edens (which owns Union Market) are planned.  According to the Washington Business Journal, celebrity chef Jose Garces will be opening a large market as part of the building.

Chinito’s Burrito’s (635 Florida Avenue, NE), a burrito takeout spot across from Gallaudet University that served Asian influenced Tex-Mex food, closed several months ago.  The spot has been vacant since.  Recently, construction has been going on inside the restaurant.  District Cuisine spoke with a representative of a new concept that will be opening in the space at the construction site several days ago.  After undergoing some renovations, the spot will reopen (potentially by February) as a similar concept with a new name.  It will offer similar food to Chinito’s that has an Asian fusion influence.  They plan to be open for lunch and dinner and may deliver as well.  More details as they become available.

Looking for something to look forward to during the cold winter months after the holidays?  Look no further than Cotton & Reed, the new craft rum distillery coming to the Union Market area (1330 5th Street, NE) this winter.  Cotton & Reed will have both a tasting room and a distillery in the location, which is slightly up the street (to the north) from the main market building at Union Market.  While you wouldn’t be able to tell based upon the outside of the building, construction is well underway inside as Cotton & Reed hopes to open in February of next year.

Cotton & Reed was founded by Reed Walker and Jordan Cotton who met in a previous professional life as NASA consultants.  They created Cotton & Reed several years ago at Blind Dog Cafe and have been working to expand and open a distillery with a tasting room ever since.  Cotton & Reed has crowdfunded much of its initial start up money utilizing Indiegogo campaigns, which recently raised over $45,000 for the business.  In addition to the founders, the company has assembled a team that includes general manager and herbalist Lukas Smith, who recently won DC Eater’s Bartender of the Year award.

While looking for a location, they were approached by Edens, the mega South Carolina real estate company that opened the Union Market market building and that has purchased major portions of the surrounding warehouses and vacant land over the past several years.  At the time, 1330 5th Street was occupied by Samsung Tofu, a wholesaler that operated in two side by side warehouse stalls.  Samsung will continue its operations but has shifted everything into one of the two stalls and a wall has been erected to subdivide the two businesses.  February is the tentative open date, but that could slide depending upon construction.  The building is quite old, and the construction team keeps finding surprises as they renovate (including unknown pipes recently).

Pretty much just in time for autumn, Masseria near Union Market (1340 4th Street, NE) is focusing on its cozy outdoor lounge that serves an a la carte menu that is less expensive than the tasting menu in the main dining room area.  You can check out our early review of Masseria here.  The lounge has comfortable couches and chairs complete with fire pits, the ideal autumn setting.  The most recent lounge menu features arancini with veal ragu, veal and pork meatballs, and calamari with a spicy saffron emulsion (you can see the entire lounge menu here).  The lounge is open from 5:30-11 pm Tuesday-Thursday, 5 pm to midnight Friday, and 3 pm to midnight on Saturdays.
