What H Street Needs: A Thai Restaurant

31 May

This is the first in a new series that will look at various dining establishments that could make H Street, already a great dining scene, even better.

In the past few years, H Street has seen a wide variety of restaurants featuring different ethnic cuisines open up: Ethiopian, Japanese (sushi), Mexican, Lebanese, Indian, Mongolian, French, Italian, and even British.  The diversity and uniqueness of H Street’s restaurants is part of what makes the area such a popular dining destination in D.C.. Despite all of this diversity, the corridor lacks one fairly common cuisine for neighborhoods throughout the area–a Thai restaurant.  Ideally, such a Thai restaurant would have a fairly large dining room area, a bar (but the bar would not be the focus of the establishment), and would offer both takeout and delivery service.

Why does H Street need such a Thai restaurant? Thai cuisine is very popular for its spice and also the diversity of different ingredients and dishes that can be served.  It would add to H Street’s already diverse dining scene in an area that is currently lacking.  Such a restaurant would also fullfil a neighborhood demand for more carryout options and delivery service.  Additionally, while the neighborhood has several restaurants and bars that serve great food, the neighborhood could use a few more places that focus more on their food instead of their alcohol service.  A quality Thai restaurant would (hopefully) provide another option on the H Street strip that focused more on food and less on alcohol.  Furthermore, a Thai restaurant would give the neighborhood a go to place for food that–while not standard American cuisine–is familiar to most people and could thus be good for larger group outings.  Hopefully the Thai restaurant would be a good place to go out for dinner and a drink either on a weeknight or before going out to other H Street bars on the weekend.

Le Grenier Opening This Sunday on H Street (Photos)

17 Aug

Le Grenier (502 H Street) will begin cooking French dishes for dinner and brunch (weekends only) this Sunday.  We sat down with co-owner Marie Ziar to learn more about the restaurant and to take a tour of the beautifully renovated space.

Bar Area at Le Grenier

Le Grenier will be a sister restaurant to Le Chat Noir in Friendship Heights.  Marie Ziar explained that she and her husband chose to open their second restaurant on H Street  because H Street is an exciting and booming area that she feels also has a real sense of community.  While Le Chat Noir has a more formal and traditional French feel, Marie Ziar explained that their goal for Le Grenier is to have a more modern atmosphere that will tailor to H Street’s younger crowd.  Le Grenier will be a restaurant first and will make food the priority (as opposed to some places on H Street that focus on alcohol but also offer food) but will also have an extensive cocktail and French wine list.

All of their food will have a French focus and will be made from scratch.  They will not have a incredibly long menu but will change it every three months to reflect the new season.  They plan on serving food that is fresh and authentic but not terribly expensive.

Le Grenier Hopes to Open in July on H Street

3 Apr

Le Grenier (502 H Street) applied for a liquor license back in March 2011 but has been largely silent since then.  However, we noticed construction occurring inside recently, and Le Grenier’s parent restaurant confirms that they hope to open sometime in July.  The construction seems to have a ways to go but hopefully they will be able to open this summer.

Le Grenier is a French style bistro from the owners of Le Chat Noir (located in Friendship Heights).  Le Chat Noir has quite an extensive menu of French dishes for lunch, brunch, and dinner.  The liquor license application for Le Grenier says that they will have indoor seating and a small sidewalk cafe to seat a few people and will be open late.  Le Grenier will add to the newly revitalized west end of H Street which has recently seen the opening of Big Board and Boundary Road.

Toki Underground and Ethiopic Make Cheap Eats List

27 Aug

Toki Underground and Ethiopic represented the H Street Corridor in this year’s issue of the Washingtonian‘s Cheap Eats list (out this month).  We’ve eaten at both and have really enjoyed both of them.  Glad to see H Street making it on to this important list!
