Currently H Street’s restaurant scene is divided into two sections: the Western end and the Eastern end without almost any restaurants in the middle. The Western end runs from Ethiopic in the 400th block to Hikari Sushi in the 600th block. The Eastern end starts with the Atlas Room in the 1000th block and runs to the 1400th block. In between there are not really any restaurants (the new Chupacabra being the exception). There is a lot of development planned for that section (including three apartment buildings and a Whole Foods) but not much has materialized so far.
That has begun to change on the Southern side of the 700th block with three new restaurants that are slated to open after construction. Walking west to east, first Heaven & H, a new deli, is planning on opening at 701 H Street in what used to be Grace Deli prior to the tragic murder of June Lim, the Grace Deli owner, last year. According to the Washington City Paper, the new Heaven & H deli will have both breakfast and lunch and will have a tribute to June Lim inside. After a significant renovation, Heaven & H appears to be only a few weeks away from opening. Next at 707 H Street, a new Ethiopian restaurant called “Addis Ethiopian” will open. While we have been unable to get more details on the restaurant, there has been major construction going on inside over the past few weeks. Finally, next door at 709 H Street, Po Boy Jim’s, a cajun restaurant, will open (you can check out our preview here). The restaurant’s space has been under construction for over a year now, and construction had appeared to come to a halt several months ago. However, in the past month, major construction has restarted on the first floor, and in September Po Boy Jim’s was at H Streetfest previewing their food.
