Fresca Taqueria Prior to Its Opening on H Street

Several days ago, Fresca Taqueria (701 H Street) opened up for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  Fresca Taqueria will be replacing The Spot Deli that closed several months ago.  Fresca will be open from 7 am to 8 pm Monday-Friday and 9 am to 8 pm Saturday-Sunday.  They do not currently have a liquor license but may explore getting one down the road.  When District Cuisine went in over the weekend, they were so busy that every single table was occupied.  We tried both the chicken quesadilla and two tostadas as takeout.  Both had good flavor and were very large portions.  We look forward to exploring the menu in more depth in the coming weeks.  You can see a copy of their menu below (click the images to enlarge them).

Progress continues at the upcoming Fresca Taqueria (701 H Street) with signage going up during the holiday week.  A peak inside reveals that construction has been going steady and that the restaurant looks like it will be ready to open up soon.  Fresca will be replacing The Spot Deli that went out of business earlier this year.

New Signage at Nando’s on H Street

New signage is up for the Nando’s that is coming soon to 411-413 H Street, and it says that the restaurant will be coming in January.  Construction has been moving swiftly for quite some time on both the exterior and interior of the building.  From a peak inside a few days ago, it does appear that the restaurant could be ready to open in a matter of weeks.

Taqueria Replacing The Spot Deli on H Street

A taqueria will be replacing The Spot Deli (701 H Street) which closed back in September.  The name is somewhat unclear from the signage–either Pronto Taqueria and Rosticeria or Fresca Taqueria and Rosticeria.  The location had undergone a renovation prior to opening as The Spot Deli; it had previously been Heaven & H Deli for only a few months and had been Grace Deli prior to that.  It is unclear if the location is related to The Spot Deli and its owner Troy Williams who is also opening a restaurant at 1255 H Street (although that construction has been stalled for several years).

It may have taken forever for the restaurant to open, but the signature wings at 6th and H Bar and Grill (523 H Street) are solid.  Slow cooked in the smoker all day, they are available in increments of 5 (5-10-15-20).  We recommend them with the honey bbq sauce.  The bar also has beer specials during NFL games–beers for $4.

1309 H Street Back on the Market, Appears Carolina Kitchen Spot Fell Through

1309 H Street

1309 H Street has been vacant for many years, despite a sign in the window saying that a new concept was coming in summer 2012.  There had been reports that a spot by the owners of Carolina Kitchen was going to open in the space, but it now appears that isn’t going to happen as there is a for lease sign out front.  The building’s exterior is quite a cool space, so we hope that something comes through soon.

As mentioned last week, IMM Thai (1360 H Street, NE) will be holding a soft opening on H Street for the next several weeks prior to their grand opening.  During this soft opening, they will have a limited menu (which turns out isn’t actually that limited, see below).  We stopped by last night to check it out.

Spicy Eggplant with Chicken at IMM Thai

Overall, we were very impressed.  We argued several years ago that H Street desperately needed a Thai restaurant, and thus far, IMM fills that void and goes beyond.  You can see the menu and pictures from our dinner down below.  Our favorites were the lettuce wrap with chicken (a traditional larb chicken dish that also had a slight sweet tang to it) and the eggplant fried rice with chicken.  The prices are reasonable and you get a significant amount of food.  Our one hope is that they do a little more work to improve the interior of the restaurant–there has not been much change since the fairly short lived Pho Bar and Grill previously occupied the space.

IMM Thai Soft Opens on H Street, Official Opening in Coming Weeks

IMM Thai (1360 H Street, NE) held the first evening of its soft opening last night and will continue to have a soft evening opening with a limited menu for the next several weeks.  This location will be their second location as they currently have a restaurant Annandale, Virginia (see our preview post here).  We spoke with the IMM Thai team, and they told us that the soft opening menu will feature several items from the larger menu at their Annandale restaurant.  They plan on being open most nights but recommend that you call their Annandale restaurant to check prior to going to their location on H.

In a couple of weeks, they will hold a grand opening and will roll out their full menu that will be similar to their Annandale menu.  They do not currently have a liquor license but plan on applying for one in the future.  Initially, IMM Thai on H will be open for dinner service only, but they plan on expanding to lunch service in the near future.

Ben’s Chili Bowl on H Street (1001 H Street) has been slowly progressing for months at this point.  Recently, permanent signage went up for the H Street branch of the D.C. legend.  However, it does appear that there is still more work to be done inside prior to opening.
